Atwater High School Baseball Philosophy
In 1958 a tradition was established. Since then, thousands of people have been a part of this special tradition. These people were ball players, and this tradition is Atwater Baseball, or “Big Blue Baseball.” Ingrained in this tradition is passion for the game itself and pride to represent Atwater High School. Each and every Atwater ball player plays to win on the field and excel in the classroom.
Since the hard work players show in the classroom will dictate how they will perform on the field, Atwater High School baseball players must value their educational opportunities. Academics are a top priority for any player in the program. The dedication exhibited by players in the classroom will also show their commitment to the team, program and coaching staff. Our goal as a program is to have a combined overall GPA of at least 3.0. A 2.0 is an average student; Atwater baseball players are not average students. Because of this, each player will strive to be at the top of his class. To attain this goal, these players must have pride in their work, enthusiasm in the classroom, and confidence in their academic endeavors.
Character is the key component that will determine an athlete’s success in all areas of his life. Atwater baseball players will think before acting and treat others as they would want to be treated. Maintaining positive relationships with their families, teammates, friends, and coaches will help to prepare them for the season. A player’s actions should always be for the benefit of the team, not the individual.
Atwater ball players will be fundamentally sound with regards to throwing mechanics, catching, base running and hitting. They will have poise on and off the field and will be able to overcome adversity when it presents itself. Players will be prepared to handle the pressures of the season through practice and off-season conditioning. Baseball is a very mental game that requires positive thinking from all individuals. Coaches and players will be optimists no matter the situation that arises. These are the goals that every player must strive to achieve if he wishes to enter and remain involved with the Atwater High School Baseball Program:
